Masks for Sickness: What You Need to Know
Masks have become a daily accessory in many parts of the world since the outbreak of COVID-19. While they were once primarily used in healthcare settings, masks are now being worn by people from all walks of life as a preventative measure against sickness. But what exactly do we know about the effectiveness of masks when it comes to preventing sickness? Let’s take a closer look.
Types of Masks
There are several types of masks available in the market, but not all of them are equally effective. The two most commonly used types of masks for sickness prevention are surgical masks and N95 respirators.
Surgical Masks
Surgical masks, also known as medical or procedure masks, are loose-fitting, disposable masks that are commonly used by healthcare professionals. These masks provide a physical barrier against droplets, which can spread respiratory viruses like COVID-19. However, surgical masks do not filter out small particles and are not designed to fit tightly around the face.
N95 Respirators
N95 respirators are personal protective equipment (PPE) designed to achieve a very close facial fit and efficient filtration of airborne particles. They are named after their ability to filter out 95% of small particles, including viruses and bacteria. N95 respirators are recommended for use by healthcare professionals because they provide a higher level of protection compared to surgical masks.
